In the U.S., massive oil and natural gas basins influence where mineral production happens, with oil-rich states like Texas and North Dakota sitting on highly productive mineral formations. One significant mineral source in the U.S. is the Bakken Oil Field.
If you live in or own land in North Dakota or Montana, you need to understand the Bakken Formation and how it can affect your mineral rights. Keep reading to learn more about the Bakken Oil Formation.
The Bakken Shale Formation, also known as the Bakken Play, Bakken Basin, Bakken Oil Field, or Bakken Group, is a major mineral formation found in the northwestern area of the U.S. in North Dakota and Montana. In fact, the Bakken Play accounts for most of the oil and gas produced in these two states.
The Bakken Play is made up of three separate layers: the Upper Shale, Middle Bakken, and Lower Bakken. While the upper and lower shale layers serve as a kind of seal on the basin, the Middle Member is the primary source of oil for the rock formation.
The Bakken makes up part of the Williston Basin, a massive mineral formation spreading across an even larger portion of the country. The Williston Formation stretches from Canada into Montana and North Dakota, extending into South Dakota. Another major formation, the Three Forks Formation, is also found in the Williston, directly beneath the Bakken Play.
According to the Energy Information Administration, as of July 2026, the Bakken’s daily production was around 1.2 million barrels of oil per day, representing significant economic output and job opportunities. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that there are 4.3 billion barrels of oil and 4.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Bakken and underlying Three Forks Formation.
Early in the 2000s, the production of crude oil shot up in North Dakota. This was thanks to the growing popularity of a relatively new oil drilling method: hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking. While North Dakota is still a major oil producer, the Bakken oil boom saw it jump up to the top of the list, producing even more than Texas during this period. Thanks to this increased economic activity, North Dakota’s unemployment rate fell, and the GDP increased.
Unfortunately, the sudden flurry of oil extraction in the region came with drawbacks, including increased crime rates and environmental impacts. The Bakken boom officially came to an end in 2014 when oil prices fell.
The Bakken Formation is known for its low permeability, which makes it harder for fluids to pass through the rocks. This can make extraction more complicated. Often, extraction in the Bakken region relies on a combination of extensive horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
The Bakken Group covers part of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Counties touched by the formation can be found below.
The Canadian region of the Bakken Shale Play covers significant parts of southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba.

From the environmental concerns posed by fracking to the unique composition of Bakken Reservoir rock, it’s important for mineral owners to learn about the ways that the Bakken Formation can impact their property rights.
As you can see, North Dakota mineral rights can be incredibly valuable, with a high likelihood that properties in the Bakken area will hold profitable mineral resources. If you live in this region, it’s time to begin considering options for capitalizing on your mineral rights.
